Downtown Fort Worth Walking Tour

September 16th, 2010 by Grover McMains

Downtown Fort Worth Burkburnett Bldg.

One of the special attractions of downtown Fort Worth is that a lot of older buildings have been preserved and restored.  The architecture and intricate relief on these buildings gives a character to our city that is missing from more modern downtowns.  History is also preserved with these buildings, many of which have had significant events take place either outside them or within.

Now you can learn about this interesting history through a free, self-guided walking tour.  Nearly two dozen historic markers have been placed thoughout downtown telling the story of the people and event that took place at that location.  Now that the weather is cooling off, it’s a perfect way to see downtown Fort Worth and learn about our city’s history all at the same time.  And guess what?  We have the maps for the tour right here at The Texas White House.  One will be waiting for you when you check in.

Perfect Time to Visit the Fort Worth Zoo

August 25th, 2010 by Grover McMains

Wow!  What a welcome relief from the 105 degree temperatures!  And it started me thinking:  pretty soon the weather is going to be cooler; that’s nice to think about all by itself, but in cooler weather the animals become more active, and, of course, it’s just a lot more pleasant being outside.  Also, the crowds are generally smaller.  So, what better time to visit the zoo, one of Fort Worth’s major attractions.

Visit the Fort Worth Zoo

The Fort Worth Zoo is ranked one of the top 5 zoos in the country.  It is constantly upgrading the surroundings of the animals.  It seems to add at least one new exhibit each year.  In fact, if you haven’t seen “Texas Wild,” that’s reason enough to make a visit there.

Here’s an idea for that really unique date.  Schedule a day to take that special someone to the zoo.  Arrive mid-morning and casually stroll the zoo with maybe a snack while you relax.  Then come to our bed and breakfast and relax some more in our Texas Star Gardens while you sip complimentary wine of your choice.  Have a relaxing dinner at one of the cozy and unique restaurants within walking distance of The Texas White House.  Next morning we’ll bring breakfast to your room to top off a really special 24 hours together.  It may be just what the two of you need — right now!

Texas Summertime Gardening

August 1st, 2010 by Grover McMains

Texas Star Hibiscus at the Texas Star Gardens

You may have noticed that there haven’t been many blog entries in the last couple of weeks.  Despite the heat in Fort Worth, there has also been some rain.  So, we’ve been enjoying the native Texas flowers and plants that are in bloom right now.  There is no lack of summertime flowers, most of which will bloom until first frost, but the star attraction, no pun intended, at the Texas Star Gardens is the late blooming Texas Star Hibiscus.  Along with the Datura, or Moon Flower, the Texas Star Hibiscus is a bloom that doesn’t last long once it opens, but as you can see from the picture, is worth the wait!

Guests at The Texas White House can still get seedlings from the garden as long as they last, which should be well into fall.  All you have to do while you are staying with us is to mention you would like to take one home, and we’ll make sure you get the one of your choice, FREE!

Ansel Adams Exhibit at the Amon Carter Museum

May 31st, 2010 by Grover McMains

Amon Carter close to our Fort Worth bed and breakfast.

Going on from now through November 7, Fort Worth’s Amon Carter Museum is presenting Ansel Adams: Eloquent Light, a display of 40 famous and lesser-known works by the man who invented several photographic techniques in wide use today.  For those of you who don’t know of him, Ansel Adams lived from 1902 to 1984 and was best known for his black and white photography of the American West.  This exhibit fits in well at the Amon Carter since it is known for its Remington and Russell collections of both artists’ Western paintings and sculptures.  As are all the major Fort Worth museums, the Amon Carter is only a short, five minute drive from our bed and breakfast.  Remember, too, if you’re planning a trip to see this attraction, the Amon Carter is closed on Mondays.

Texas Historical Commission Completes Heritage Trails Program

May 5th, 2010 by Grover McMains

Those of you who travel the highways and by-ways of Texas (not the Interstates) have undoubtedly seen signs like “Texas Lakes Trail” with a logo pointing the way along that particular trail.  If you’re like me, I always want to follow the trail to see what’s down that road!   The Texas Historical Commission has 10 such trails around the state, and they have just introduced the 10th and last brochure in the program, this one detailing the Texas Hill Country.

Texas Lakes Trail is one of Ten Heritage Trails

The Heritage Trails Program began in 1968 when then Governor John Connally established it to promote regional tourism in conjunction with HemisFair, the World’s Fair event in San Antonio commerating the 250th anniversary of the founding of that city.  For years the only active part of the program was the signs.  Then in 1997 the Historical Commission was given the task of expanding the trails to promote regional, heritage tourism.  Fort Worth is part of the Lakes Trail Region covering 31 Texas counties.  Our trail features such Fort Worth attractions as Thistle Hill Mansion, the Stockyards and Log Cabin Village, as well as sites from Clifton to Paris and Consicana to Gainesville.  You can see which trail comes through your part of the state by visiting the web site, www.thc.state.tx.us, and selecting Heritage Tourism.  All bed and breakfasts who are members of the Texas Bed & Breakfast Association should have brochures at their property for the trail in their region.

It would not be easy to travel any given trail in one trip.  The idea behind the brochures is to promote heritage sites in the region and to suggest day-trips to one or more of those sites.  It’s a great way to see the rich history that is such a vital part of our state.  Staying at a bed & breakfast along the way, many of which are also designated, historical sites, makes your trip even more enjoyable.

The Texas White House Recommends Four Day Weekend

April 30th, 2010 by Grover McMains

The Improv Group Four Day Weekend

There are always new places opening in Sundance Square in downtown Fort Worth.  Some stay around and some open and quickly close.  Take it from someone who knows, that is more internal to the operation than the place just being unpopular.  That also makes those who do stick around seem even more special; so, typically those are the ones we recommend to our guests.  For entertainment in Sundance Square there is no one better than the Four Day Weekend Improvisational Group.  Several of their members have left Fort Worth for the national stage and can often be seen on television.  But regardless of the cast, the quality remains.  The shows are reasonably priced and leave plenty of time to see other attractions while in downtown.  Whether you’re staying at our bed and breakfast or not, don’t miss spending an evening with Four Day Weekend.

Super Bowl Planning for Fort Worth

April 10th, 2010 by Grover McMains

Fort Worth and Super Bowl XLV

Only die-hard football fans are thinking about the sport at this time of year, but there is a lot of planning and work going on in Fort Worth right now for next year’s Super Bowl at Cowboy Stadium.  Here are some things to think about if you’re considering coming here for the Super Bowl.  There are close to thirty official NFL Sponsors, large corporations which use the Super Bowl week to entertain their largest clients.  No, you are not one of those, no matter how much beer you drink!  But you can take advantage of what’s going on because many of the parties and attractions put on by these NFL Sponsors are open to the public.  So, here’s a planning tip to think about: come to Fort Worth, stay close to the center of town, go to the parties and activities the Thursday, Friday and Saturday before the game.  Then head home Sunday in time to watch the Super Bowl on television (you’d be surprised how many Sponsor executives do exactly that!).  I’ll be posting additional information at least once a month about Super Bowl events, especially Fort Worth events, and how you might be a part of them.

Free Transportation to Main Street Arts Festival

March 29th, 2010 by Grover McMains

If it’s spring, and officially it is, then it must be time for Fort Worth’s Main Street Arts Festival.  Artists’ booth down the center of Main Street, food and beverages on the side streets and people everywhere!

Main Street Arts Festival

All festivities begin on April 8, but if you slip downtown on the evening of April 7, you can usually get a preview of many of the booths as they set up (just a little hint from a local!).  This year’s attraction includes many, shall we say, unusual live acts including music from chain saws and yo-yo demonstrations/performances.  The Texas White House is only 1.5 miles from the center of all of this activity, and if you stay at our bed and breakfast during the festival, we’ll provide your transportation downtown.  If you like crowds, you’ll love the Main Street Arts Festival, but at least you won’t have to hassle with the traffic and closed streets!

Family Vacation at our Fort Worth Bed & Breakfast

March 25th, 2010 by Grover McMains

During spring break or anytime your family can get away for some time together, use our bed and breakfast as your home away from home.  What makes that even better than just a great place to stay is that we are within walking distance of the city’s top family attraction, the Fort Worth Zoo, and are 5-6 minutes from the Log Cabin Village, the longest miniature train in the world and the Omni Theater at the Fort Worth Museum of Science & History.

Texas Wild! at the Fort Worth Zoo

Top that off with some family restaurants within walking distance, and you have a simple vacation to plan and a great one to be a part of!  All you have to do is call us, book the Longhorn Suite  and get ready to have some family fun.

Butterflies Invade Fort Worth Botanic Gardens

Conservatory at Fort Worth Botanic Gardens

Conservatory at Fort Worth Botanic Gardens

This is not the time of the year most people think of going to the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens.  But I doubt you will ever be surrounded by as much color as the attraction now in place at their conservatory.  You can literally walk among 2400 butterflies each week through April 4.  Between now and the end of the exhibit, about 12,000 butterflies will have been on display.  In fact, you must be checked before you leave to make sure one or more are not “hitchhiking” out on you!  Butterflies from both North and South America, Southeast Asia and Africa are on display.  What a fun date or family outing.  Even more fun would be to make mini-vacation out of it by staying at The Texas White House.  Call us and ask about our “butterfly special!”
