Texas White House Video

September 8th, 2010 by Grover McMains

Land of Contrast Room at The Texas White House

We normally use this blog to let you know about events or other special things in and around Fort Worth and mention The Texas White House only as it helps you to come see that event.  However, for the past month or so, we’ve been finishing a very short video designed to introduce prospective guests to our bed and breakfast.  We especially want our fans on Facebook to see this new video and thought this post would be the best way to do that.  So, please take a look at the new Texas White House video and let us know what you think.

As a way of saying “Thanks” for looking at the video, everyone who responds to this post with an email back to us and comments on the video will be entered into a drawing for a copy of Texas Bed & Breakfast Cookbook by Carol and Erin Faino, an award-winning, hard-bound edition including over 200 recipes from bed and breakfasts all over Texas with detailed descriptions of the contributing bed and breakfasts.  We will mail the cookbook to the winner along with some of our most popular breakfast recipes for you to enjoy.  The cookbook is a $20.00 value; our recipes are priceless!  Well, at least we think so!  The winning email will be notified on September 30.

Who Comes to the Super Bowl?

September 2nd, 2010 by Grover McMains

Before you read any further, think back to the last professional football game you went to; now how would you describe the average fan?  Close your eyes and remember the people around you; what did the fans on the jumbo TV look like?  Once you have some ideas, read on.

Super Bowl comes to Fort Worth

Here are some interesting statistics of your “average” Super Bowl guest.  First, remember that the Super Bowl is not a football game; it’s a corporate event.  So, it shouldn’t be too surprising that 85% of the fans are from out-of-state and as many as 90% will arrive here by plane – most by private jet!  Are you beginning to get a different picture than the person who sat next to you?  Well, over half of the entire stadium will make more than $75,000/year, and almost half of those will make over $100,000!  Here’s the most telling statistic; 65% are the key decision-makers in their company.

Given these numbers it shouldn’t be too hard to figure why tickets to the Super Bowl are so hard to come by!  Having said all that, there isn’t anything that says you can’t rub shoulders with those owners of the private jets.  Remember that Fort Worth will be host to the AFC representative to the Super Bowl.  All AFC parties are going to be in Fort Worth, and there will be a lot of them that are open to the public.  Additionally, I’m sure you’ve heard that ESPN has selected downtown Fort Worth to be the location for over 80 hours of live broadcasts during the week before the game.  Here’s where you insert the words, celebrities, players, coaches, analysts.  Get the picture, no pun intended!  You can be a part of all of this just by being here.  Here’s where you insert the words, Texas White House!

Perfect Time to Visit the Fort Worth Zoo

August 25th, 2010 by Grover McMains

Wow!  What a welcome relief from the 105 degree temperatures!  And it started me thinking:  pretty soon the weather is going to be cooler; that’s nice to think about all by itself, but in cooler weather the animals become more active, and, of course, it’s just a lot more pleasant being outside.  Also, the crowds are generally smaller.  So, what better time to visit the zoo, one of Fort Worth’s major attractions.

Visit the Fort Worth Zoo

The Fort Worth Zoo is ranked one of the top 5 zoos in the country.  It is constantly upgrading the surroundings of the animals.  It seems to add at least one new exhibit each year.  In fact, if you haven’t seen “Texas Wild,” that’s reason enough to make a visit there.

Here’s an idea for that really unique date.  Schedule a day to take that special someone to the zoo.  Arrive mid-morning and casually stroll the zoo with maybe a snack while you relax.  Then come to our bed and breakfast and relax some more in our Texas Star Gardens while you sip complimentary wine of your choice.  Have a relaxing dinner at one of the cozy and unique restaurants within walking distance of The Texas White House.  Next morning we’ll bring breakfast to your room to top off a really special 24 hours together.  It may be just what the two of you need — right now!

Gary Nicholson Selected to Texas Heritage Songwriters' Hall of Fame

July 12th, 2010 by Grover McMains

Gary Nicholson's room at The Texas White House

Just like most songwriters, you’ve probably never heard of Gary Nicholson, but he’s published over 350 songs and is responsible for over a dozen major hits in country music, rock, blues and folk.  He’s also been a frequent visitor to The Texas White House.  In fact, his favorite room is the Land of Contrast because it’s decorated in black and white, but that’s a story for another time.

Gary has been selected to be a 2011 inductee into the Texas Heritage Songwriter’s Association Hall of Fame along with his close friend, Delbert McClinton, who also visited The Texas White House.  Gary was born in Garland, Texas but now lives in Nashville with his wife, Barbara.  He routinely performs at the McDavid Studio here in Fort Worth, part of the Bass Performance Hall.  However, for the first time in 30 years he will return to Garland, conduct a Songwriter’s Workshop on July 24 (469-831-2123) and perform on July 25 at the Plaza Theatre (972-205-2790) in association with the Garland Country Music Association.  The show will benefit Attachment Parenting International.  If you enjoy up-close, smaller venue shows and great talent, you should plan to see Gary perform.  You’ll also be helping a very worthwhile charity.  We’ll be there.  If you come because of this post, introduce yourself to us, and we’ll buy you a drink!

Texas Historical Commission Completes Heritage Trails Program

May 5th, 2010 by Grover McMains

Those of you who travel the highways and by-ways of Texas (not the Interstates) have undoubtedly seen signs like “Texas Lakes Trail” with a logo pointing the way along that particular trail.  If you’re like me, I always want to follow the trail to see what’s down that road!   The Texas Historical Commission has 10 such trails around the state, and they have just introduced the 10th and last brochure in the program, this one detailing the Texas Hill Country.

Texas Lakes Trail is one of Ten Heritage Trails

The Heritage Trails Program began in 1968 when then Governor John Connally established it to promote regional tourism in conjunction with HemisFair, the World’s Fair event in San Antonio commerating the 250th anniversary of the founding of that city.  For years the only active part of the program was the signs.  Then in 1997 the Historical Commission was given the task of expanding the trails to promote regional, heritage tourism.  Fort Worth is part of the Lakes Trail Region covering 31 Texas counties.  Our trail features such Fort Worth attractions as Thistle Hill Mansion, the Stockyards and Log Cabin Village, as well as sites from Clifton to Paris and Consicana to Gainesville.  You can see which trail comes through your part of the state by visiting the web site, www.thc.state.tx.us, and selecting Heritage Tourism.  All bed and breakfasts who are members of the Texas Bed & Breakfast Association should have brochures at their property for the trail in their region.

It would not be easy to travel any given trail in one trip.  The idea behind the brochures is to promote heritage sites in the region and to suggest day-trips to one or more of those sites.  It’s a great way to see the rich history that is such a vital part of our state.  Staying at a bed & breakfast along the way, many of which are also designated, historical sites, makes your trip even more enjoyable.

March 25th, 2010 by Grover McMains

During spring break or anytime your family can get away for some time together, use our bed and breakfast as your home away from home.  What makes that even better than just a great place to stay is that we are within walking distance of the city’s top family attraction, the Fort Worth Zoo, and are 5-6 minutes from the Log Cabin Village, the longest miniature train in the world and the Omni Theater at the Fort Worth Museum of Science & History.

You probably have heard that Fort Worth and Dallas received an all-time record snowfall of over 9 inches on February 11, but you also need to know that our bed and breakfast also recorded a new record, coincidentally of over 9 inches!  Other than at ski resorts, I have never seen this much snow at one time; it is truly a winter wonderland and a wonderful experience despite what our friends in the northeast are saying!  I even got to use a snow shovel to clear the walkways.  Wow!  What fun!  And good exercise.  That snowman is over 5 feet tall!  I want to thank our guests, Joey, Kerry, Jordan and David, whose excitement at being a part of this event made the day even more beautiful.

Unwind at our bed and breakfast

Privacy at The Texas White House

The holidays are over!  That’s a “good news/bad news” type of thing for most of us.  Regardless of how the holidays affected you, January is a good month to unwind from holiday shopping and rushing around in all the traffic.  And, of course, with holiday bills, you don’t want to spend a lot of money.  So, The Texas White House has just the answer!  My favorite solution is our Privacy Package:   Picture the two of you relaxing in a two-person, whirlpool bubble bath, sipping wine and munching snacks with only a candle light glow; a private dinner for two, sitting on plush cushions in front of your own fireplace;  and do you think you could continue relaxing and have breakfast in bed?  This package includes all of this: one night in either of our Longhorn Suite; snacks and wine, the delivery fee on dinner from any of several, local restaurants, and breakfast brought to your room; all for a total price of $299.00, plus tax.  Mention this post, and you’ll receive an additional discount of $10.00.  And if you want to book this special during the week, we will reduce the price another $10.00!    It’s all available to you right now at our Fort Worth bed and breakfast.

Our Bed & Breakfast and Your Money

$50 Bills

Fort Worth Western Currency Facility

Fort Worth is proud to be the home of one of only two places in this country that make your paper money!  The Western Currency Facility of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing probably printed all the paper money you have in your pocket right now, and you can see them do it during a free, fascinating 45 min. tour.  The facility is just a short drive from our Fort Worth bed and breakfast.  In fact, stay with us and get free money before you go to the tour!  You give us a $20 bill, and we’ll give you two $10 bills!  Well, OK; you don’t really get free money, but you will get a great tour.
