Football Time in Texas

August 28th, 2010 by Grover McMains

Yesterday was the first night of Texas high school football for the 2010-2011 season.  Unfortunately, Fort Worth doesn’t have a highly ranked high school team in any division.  However, around Fort Worth are a number of highly ranked teams including Euless, the state’s #1 ranked 5A team.  And the kickoff of high school football means that college and the pros are not far behind.  In fact, some of you diehard fans may have already been watching the pros in preseason games.

And once you move to college and the pros, Fort Worth is right in the middle of great football.  Whether it’s the TCU Horned Frogs, pre-season #7 pick, or the Cowboys, The Texas White House is just minutes from either stadium.  Less than 30 minutes from the new Cowboy Stadium (insert 2011 Super Bowl!) and only about 5 minutes from TCU’s Amon Carter Stadium, if your wife will agree, you can stay here and take in two, top games in one weekend.  The best part is that while you’re at the game, your wife or girlfriend can be seeing the sights or shopping, both of which are also only 5 minutes away.  Sounds like a dream weekend for any football fanatic.

Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo Lodging

June 23rd, 2010 by Grover McMains

Our Fort Worth bed & breakfast is close by!

Next year’s Stock Show & Rodeo participants and guests have definitely been impacted by the fact that the Super Bowl will be here in 2011.  If you  don’t already know it, the final night of the Rodeo has been moved back to February 5 from the 6th because the Super Bowl is February 6!  I think a layman might call that a conflict.  However, no one asked me.  That said, there is no reason why anyone coming to the 2011 Stock Show & Rodeo should have to be inconvenienced regarding lodging.  The Texas White House, a Fort Worth premier bed and breakfast, is only about 5-6 minutes from the Will Rogers Coliseum by residential streets and has lodging available for next year’s event.  The rates for that period are being posted on our web site; however, if you mention you are attending the Stock Show, I can work with you to accommodate your needs.  We are restricted to couples for the most part or, of course, single individuals.  And some other restrictions apply; so, please call us directly, and we will discuss them with you.  If you’re reading this and already have lodging for the show but know of someone who is still looking, please pass this information along.

Fort Worth Colonial Golf Tournament

I’m sure all you golfers know that the  Colonial is coming up May 24 – 30 in Fort Worth.  OK, I know; its official name is the Crowne Plaza Invitational at the Colonial, but to us locals, it is and always will be the Colonial!  Over the years we’ve had many guests stay with us and go to the  golf tournament; some walk, some drive and park in our secret area not too far away.  Either way, it’s convenient to stay at The Texas White House because you’re just a little over one mile away from some great golf.  And after the day’s play, you’ll be back on our big, front porch sipping wine and relaxing while everyone else is still in traffic going home.

Free Transportation to Main Street Arts Festival

March 29th, 2010 by Grover McMains

If it’s spring, and officially it is, then it must be time for Fort Worth’s Main Street Arts Festival.  Artists’ booth down the center of Main Street, food and beverages on the side streets and people everywhere!

Main Street Arts Festival

All festivities begin on April 8, but if you slip downtown on the evening of April 7, you can usually get a preview of many of the booths as they set up (just a little hint from a local!).  This year’s attraction includes many, shall we say, unusual live acts including music from chain saws and yo-yo demonstrations/performances.  The Texas White House is only 1.5 miles from the center of all of this activity, and if you stay at our bed and breakfast during the festival, we’ll provide your transportation downtown.  If you like crowds, you’ll love the Main Street Arts Festival, but at least you won’t have to hassle with the traffic and closed streets!

Richard March stays at The Texas White House

March 18th, 2010 by Grover McMains

Richard March music from The Texas White House

Singer/songwriter Richard March stayed at our Fort Worth bed and breakfast while he performed at The Aardvark close to TCU.  Richard is on a tour of the southwest building a fan base and getting to know the area.   He blends a love for country and western music with the folk music he grew up with using a combination of guitar, harmonica and piano.  Richard leaves Fort Worth and after a quick trip to Norman, Oklahoma, will come back to Texas to play in Bastrop and Austin.   Check out his web site at richardmarch.com and pick up his latest album called, “These Dreams.”  Better yet, go see Richard in person.  We look forward to having him back at The Texas White House.

Fort Worth St. Patrick's Day Cowtown Goes Green

March 6th, 2010 by Grover McMains

St. Patrick's Day in Fort Worth

St. Patrick's Day in Fort Worth

St. Patrick’s Day doesn’t seem like it would mean much to Fort Worth cowboys and cowtown.  But you probably didn’t know that St. Patrick came from the west side of Ireland!  To celebrate that little-known fact, Fort Worth will break out the green with a downtown parade and a full day’s activities in the Stockyards.  All attractions will be held on March 13 even though St. Patrick’s Day is really March 17 (after all, what’s tradition got to do with it?).  And it’s not just for the little people!  Adults are welcome, too.

Run, Run, Run to The Texas White House

February 16th, 2010 by Grover McMains

That’s right!  It’s time for the Fort Worth Cowtown Marathon, February 27.  This year’s events include the marathon, an ultra, half, 10K and 5K, all of which begin in downtown.  So, if you’re into running, there’s a race for you.

And if you’re into eating the right breakfast before the race or the evening before, stay at our bed and breakfast, and we’ll have your special food, fixed just for you.  And then we’re only a mile and a half from the start of the race.  Perfect race!  Perfect place!  Just call us to reserve your room and food.

Fort Worth Livestock Show & Rodeo and The Texas White House

January 13th, 2010 by Grover McMains

stockshowSpeaking of cattle (see our posting under Fort Worth museums) it’s time for the 114th Fort Worth Livestock Show & Rodeo, the longest, continuously running livestock show in the United States.  Beginning Friday, January 15 and running until February 7, the show involves food, western vendors, livestock judging and, of course, one of the major rodeos of the year.  There are even special rodeo events separate from the rodeo itself.  Except for the finals rodeo, there are plenty of tickets and plenty of parking.  It’s great fun for a couple or the family; so, check the Stock Show site for a daily schedule, then call The Texas White House for your reservation.  We are only 5-6 minutes from all the action.  A lot of people think that the show is in the Fort Worth Stockyards, but it’s not.  Except for the downtown parade on Saturday, January 16, all events are held at the Will Rogers Coliseum and Complex just northwest of our bed and breakfast.  If you have time, plan to come during the week; mention this post, and we’ll give you a discount on your room.  And definitely plan to spend two nights.  There’s just too much to see for only one day!

Cutting Horse Futurity

November 1st, 2009 by Grover McMains

Cutting Horse

Cutting Horse

The National Cutting Horse Futurity comes to Fort Worth’s Will Rogers Coliseum November 21 to December 13.  It’s one of three cutting horse shows held in Fort Worth each year, but the futurity is the premier attraction.  Two important points: first, our Fort Worth bed and breakfast is only 5 min. from the Will Rogers, and second, until the finals, admission is free!  If you’ve never seen cutting horses in action, you’ve missed something very special.  It is an exciting event each time a cutting horse works, and the interaction between horse, man and cow brings the old west to life again each time I see it.
